Northern Rockies Psychoanalytic
Institute is the only psychoanalytic institute anywhere between
Minneapolis and Seattle north of Denver.
Founded in Fall of 2003 to disseminate psychoanalytic thinking
in a region largely unfamiliar with it, NRPI finds itself in
a unique location, internally and externally speaking, from which
to be developing its own assimilation of a host of psychoanalytic
schools of thought, as well as disciplines outside of psychoanalysis – an
enterprise Freud always thought was quintessential to its evolution.
Starting with Freud, and moving through Klein, Winnicott, and
Bion, paralleled by the thinking of Carl Jung, enriched by Lacan, Hyman Spotnitz and Phyllis Meadow, we
also study the contributions of contemporary psychoanalytic thinkers
such as André Green, Christopher Bollas, Michael Eigen, as well
as the intersubjectivists and relationalists. The work being done in environmental
ethics, and by philosopher Slavoj Žižek, and their interfaces
with psychoanalysts Françoíse Davoine and Jean-Max Gaudilličre,
which intersect with that of some Native American medicine men,
also lend themselves to NRPI’s theoretical receptivity
here in the Northern Rockies, whose stunning beauty and sublimity
continually remind us not to be too attached to the things of
our creation, be they mental or physical.
NRPI does not identify itself as embracing a particular school
of psychoanalytic thought, but sees itself as ethically bound
to deeply study and teach as much of "the world" as
we are able. To that end, we are fortunate enough to have a correspondence
with some of the world’s leading psychoanalysts, some of
whom will travel and already have traveled here to present to
us.
